Weidman and Weidman 2016

I had the huge blessing to go back to my mission on Friday and Saturday of this week to see the sealing of a family I taught. #somuchjoy #somuchlove While there, I was able to visit my incredible mission president, President Weidman, and his amazing wife, Sister Weidman.

They are fantastic leaders. They are responsible. They are committed. They are humble, charitable, and diligent. They are friends to people of all nations. They’ve lived abroad and speak many languages. They are masters of money management. He’s managed several large companies. They know how to work together in harmony. They seek counsel from others.

I’m voting for them. I invite you consider them. #Weidman2016

‘Tis a Gift to Be Single

So I was gardening the other day, and it occurred to me that the lyrics to “Simple Gifts” could easily changed to fit my life circumstance.

Tis the gift to be single, ’tis the gift to be free
‘Tis the gift to be right where we want to be,
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
‘Twill be in the valley of love and delight.

Okay, so I don’t know what the whole valley of love and delight stuff is about. But I wanted to write about the gift to be single.

Sometimes it doesn’t feel like a gift, because everyone’s always talking about how wonderful marriage is, and how it’s the best thing ever and God’s plan and stuff. I get it. And I’m not going anti-marriage or anything, I’m just trying to be positive about my situation.

I’ve come to the realization that if I weren’t single right now, I wouldn’t be able to pursue the new dreams I’ve come upon, like moving to a big city to teach refugees. I’m really excited about where my life is going, and I think Heavenly Father has given me this time as a gift. I do want to be married someday, but for now I’m anxiously engaged in doing good things on my own.

March book: Life of Pi

life-of-pi-book-cover

Ohhhhh my goodness. This book. Adjectives include, but are not limited to: exciting, thought-provoking, insightful, life-changing, beautiful, eloquent, unique, entertaining. Defs in my top 5 faves of all time.

Life of Pi is about an Indian boy named Piscine Patel (Pi for short) who is tragically shipwrecked and orphaned, and left to traverse the Pacific ocean on a lifeboat with a 450-pound Bengal tiger.

Allow me to share a few of my favorite quotes.

“If we citizens do not support our artists, then we sacrifice our imagination on the altar of crude reality and we end up believing in nothing and having worthless dreams” (XII).

“To choose doubt as a philosophy of life is akin to choosing immobility as a means of transportation” (28).

“Hindus, in their capacity to love, are indeed hairless Christians, just as Muslims, in the way they see God in everything, are bearded Hindus, and Christians, in their devotion to God, are hat-wearing Muslims” (50).

“I offered prayers to Christ, who is alive. Then I raced down the hill on the left and raced up the hill on the right– to offer thanks to Lord Krishna for having put Jesus of Nazareth, whose humanity I found so compelling, in my way” (58).

“These people fail to realize that it is on the inside that God must be defended, not on the outside. They should direct their anger at themselves. For evil in the open is but evil from within that has been let out. The main battlefield for good is not the open ground of the public arena but the small clearing of each heart. Meanwhile, the lot of widows and homeless children is very hard, and it is to their defense, not God’s, that the self-righteous should rush” (71).

“I must say one word about fear. It is life’s only true opponent. Only fear can defeat life. It is a clever, treacherous adversary. … Quickly you make rash decisions. You dismiss your last allies: hope and trust. There, you’ve defeated yourself. Fear, which is but an impression, has triumphed over you” (161-62).

“Time is an illusion that only makes us pant. I survived because I forgot even the very notion of time” (192).

“I cannot think of a better way to spread the faith [than leaving Bibles in hotel rooms]. No thundering from a pulpit, no condemnation from bad churches, no peer pressure, just a book of scripture quietly waiting to say hello, as gentle and powerful as a little girl’s kiss on your cheek” (208).

“Faith in God is an opening up, a letting go, a deep trust, a free act of love” (208).

“The lower you are, the higher your mind will want to soar. It was natural that, bereft and desperate as I was, in the throes of unremitting suffering, I should turn to God” (284).

“Isn’t telling about something–using words, English or Japanese– already something of an invention? Isn’t just looking at this world already something of an invention? The world isn’t just the way it is. It is how we understand it, no? And in understanding something, we bring something to it, no? Doesn’t that make life a story?” (302)

First Place Loser

When I was in 4th grade, I got 2nd place at the Provo City track meet in the 200 yard dash. After catching my breath, I walked over to my dad, and exclaimed, “If it weren’t for the girl in front of me, I would’ve won!”

Ain’t that the truth.

But I had a similar experience this week– I was one of two applicants who made it to the 2nd interview, after the other 73 applicants were eliminated. I guess it was an honor to have made it that far, but I’m now in the exact same position as al the others who didn’t even get a second interview.

Have you ever thought about what it must feel like to make it to the super bowl, and then lose? Or go all the way to the Olympics, and then not get gold? Or become the Republican candidate, and then lose? In some ways, I feel there is more pain in 2nd place.

For me, the further along I go, the most emotionally invested and thus vulnerable I become. When you make it ALMOST as far as the winner, and then don’t win, it bites.

Lest you think I’m super depressed about this, I’m fine. I’m excited for my future. But I think there’s a group of 2nd placers out there who could really use some compassion.

Did you watch the Provo City Center Temple cultural celebration yesterday? I hope you did. I got to go to the Marriott Center to watch it live, and it was fantastic. Then today I had the glorious opportunity to watch the dedication of the Provo City Center Temple, formerly the Provo Tabernacle. I want to take this time to write a little memoir of this beloved building.

To begin with, I have several special memories going to stake conference in the tabernacle. It was the only time we ever drove to church, and the benches were the most uncomfortable benches I’ve ever sat on for two hours straight. I also sang the Mozart Requiem there with my high school choir and other chamber choirs from Utah, under the direction of Mack Wilberg. Pretty awesome experience. I always thought it was the prettiest building in Provo.

Then on December 17, 2010, the gem of Provo caught fire, and the entire interior was demolished to ashes.

We all mourned its loss, and wondered how Heavenly Father could possibly allow this to happen to one of His sacred buildings. The following Conference, President Monson gave one of the greatest announcements we’ve ever heard:

I was living in Hawaii at the time of this announcement, so I was watching Conference by myself on my bed at 6:00 in the morning. Let’s just say tears were shed. Loudly. For a good 20 minutes. #joy #tendermercy #beautyforahses #Hisplan #grateful

Then the tabernacle went from this

to this.

Stunning. When we all asked why, we didn’t know He had a bigger, better plan for our tabernacle. I know it is the same with our lives– when tragedy strikes, and we figuratively catch fire, it’s because Heavenly Father has a bigger, better plan for us. I know that to be true. He makes beauty from ashes.

February Book: The Pun Also Rises

10115296

This is a clever nonfiction book about the history of punning in the English language. There is at least one pun per page, which makes it a joy to read. One example of punning in this book is the subtitle: How the Humble Pun Revolutionized Language, Changed History, and Made Wordplay More Than Some Antics. Haaaaa.

This is one quote that I particularly loved:
“The assumption that puns are per se contemptible, betrayed by the habit of describing every pun as a ‘bad pun’ or a ‘feeble pun’ is a sign at once of sheepish docility and a desire to seem superior. Puns are good, bad, and indifferent, and only those who lack the wit to make them are unaware of the fact.”
Preach! I HATE it when people say stupid things like, “Pardon the pun.”

So if you want an interesting, witty, informative book, I recommend The Pun Also Rises.

Some favorite puns from the book:
The ham walked out of the doctor and said, “I’m cured!”
The archaeologist’s career ended in ruins.
Dermatologists sometimes make rash decisions.
How many ears does Davey Crockett have? Three- a right ear, a left ear, and a wild front ear.
Why did the golfer wear two pairs of pants? In case he got a hole in one.
A distraught patient rushes into a psychiatrist’s office. “Doctor, doctor! I think I’m a wigwam, then I think I’m a tepee. I’m a wigwam, I’m a tepee. I’m a wigwam, I’m a tepee.” “Relax,” the shrink says. “You’re just too tense.”

Robert Wallace Blair: Leader, Mentor, Fan

Think of the biggest BYU Coungar fan you can imagine. Now multiply that by 6. You are thinking of my grandfather, Bob Blair, who is the most devoted Cougar football fan in the world.

Grandpa Blair passed away on Friday, after 11 years of dialysis, and countless “See you in the next life”s and “This is the last time I’ll ever see you”s. Every time I left for school, I said my last goodbye, and he imparted wisdom. And then he was still there when I came back! He was there for another concert, another missionary farewell, another birthday. He was my most devoted fan.

My grandpa was a man of great faith. He loved the Lord, and he served Him will all his heart. He and my grandma opened the Baltic mission, and presided in unity and love.

My grandpa never answered the question “How many languages do you speak?” but I settled on 45. He served his mission in Finland, he translated the Book of Mormon into Mayan, he spoke all the languages in his and my grandma’s mission, and he and my grandma taught English in Guatemala and China. He was told in his patriarchal blessing that he had the gift of tongues, and I always talk about him when I needed a Gift of Tongues story.

12745571_10208425866945903_6570565675024473270_n

Although the last decade of my grandpa’s life was physically painful, he never failed to show love and interest in his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. We gathered every Sunday to eat and sing hymns, and he always expressed his love for us and the Lord.

Grandpa had lots of ideas about Education Reform. I hope to carry on his legacy as I try to do my best with my own students. I’m counting on him to help me from the other side.

A Valentine’s Day Post

Well, it’s that time of year again. The time of year when it’s no longer Christmas or my birthday, but somehow it’s still bitter cold. The time of year when my students have lost their holiday energy and aren’t motivated to do anything. The time of year when everyone talks about love and marriage and how nice it all is.

I’m not complaining– I actually love being single. I’ve come to the conclusion that if I don’t get married in this life, I’ll have a wide selection of really awesome men who died without marriage. A few of my options are:

1. Alvin Smith
Alvin_Smith
Apparently Joseph says he’s the most attractive man he’s ever seen besides Adam and Seth.

2. One of the Sweetwater boys
greater_love
So they died (unmarried) performing an incredibly selfless act of service. That’s the kind of boy I’d like to be with for eternity.

3. Abel
url
I mean, maybe he was married. Who knows.

4. Someone who died in war
VIETNAM
Options.

5. Fred Weasley
Fred_Weasley_Profile
So our kids would be half bloods, but we all know that blood status means nothing.

Just think of the high need of single women in Heaven! Way more men than women have died in war over the course of the history of the world, so it’s got to measure out somehow. Just saying.
